The pads and lands to which components are mounted are typically plated, because the bare copper is not readily solderable. This is traditionally done by HAL (Hot Air Levelling): Any exposed copper is plated with solder. This solder was mostly a tin-lead alloy, but with the new EU directive RoHS new solder compounds are now used. Top Tec PCB offers following surface finishes for your prototype or PCB-series: HAL Snpb, HAL leadfree, chem. tin, chem. gold, chem. silver or blank copper. Also Edge connectors, made on the sides of some boards (e.g. PCI-Cards), can be produced gold plated.
